Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland: why the perfect start still comes with warning signs

Manchester City Sunderland delivered an eight-goal thriller

Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start with a dramatic 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start

City scored five, remained top of the table and extended their winning run in all competitions, but the result also exposed defensive problems that manager Enzo Maresca will want to address quickly. Sunderland created enough danger to score three times, with Brian Brobbey producing a hat-trick.

For City, it was another reminder that attacking firepower can hide structural problems but not always solve them.

City’s attack remains devastating

Manchester City once again showed why they are so difficult to contain.

Antoine Semenyo scored twice, while Rayan Cherki, Enzo Fernández and Erling Haaland also found the net. Haaland’s late goal completed the scoring and ensured City stayed three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The variety of scorers is particularly important.

City are not relying on one player to produce every decisive moment. Goals are arriving from several areas of the pitch, which makes their attack harder to predict.

Sunderland exposed the defensive weaknesses

The concern came at the other end.

Sunderland managed to score three times and created more shots on target than City, an unusual statistic for a team playing away at the Etihad.

Brian Brobbey caused major problems for City’s central defenders and became the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since 2016.

City’s defensive line struggled with physical duels and transitions, particularly when Sunderland attacked directly.

Brobbey caused problems for Rúben Dias

Brobbey’s movement and strength created repeated issues for Rúben Dias.

City were unable to control him consistently when Sunderland attacked quickly, and several of their defensive problems came from moments when the back line became stretched.

Josko Gvardiol also endured a difficult game at left-back as Sunderland continued to find space.

These are the kinds of problems stronger opponents could punish even more severely.

Why Maresca was still concerned

Despite the win, Enzo Maresca was not fully satisfied.

The City manager acknowledged that his team must improve defensively and control matches better. Reuters reported that Maresca would rather see City win narrowly with greater control than repeatedly become involved in high-scoring games.

That reaction makes sense.

A team with title ambitions cannot assume it will score four or five goals every week.

Haaland keeps finding new records

Erling Haaland added another milestone.

His late goal meant he has now scored against all 25 Premier League clubs he has faced.

Even on a day when City’s defence created problems, Haaland remained capable of deciding the game at the other end.

His consistency gives City a major advantage, especially when matches become chaotic.

Is the perfect start misleading?

Not necessarily.

City are still winning, scoring freely and sitting top of the Premier League.

But perfect results do not mean perfect performances.

The 5-3 win showed that City can overpower opponents even when they are not fully in control, but it also revealed weaknesses in defensive transitions and one-on-one defending.

Those weaknesses may become more important against elite opposition.

Why this result matters

City head into the international break with momentum and a perfect league record.

That gives Maresca time to work on defensive organisation without the pressure of poor results.

The challenge is improving the back line without losing the attacking freedom that has made City so dangerous.

If they find that balance, their perfect start could become something more sustainable.

What comes next?

The international break gives Manchester City time to reset before the Premier League resumes.

The next phase of the season will show whether the defensive issues against Sunderland were simply part of one chaotic match or a recurring problem.

The attack looks ready for a title challenge.

The defence still has questions to answer.
